What is Feminist Counselling?
If you are familiar with WAVAW’s services then you know that WAVAW offers free one-to-one and group counselling sessions for survivors of sexualized violence. You may also know that all of the counsellors at WAVAW work within a feminist, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive framework.
But what does it mean to work within a feminist, anti-oppressive framework?
It means being rooted in the understanding that we are not responsible for the violence perpetrated against us. This is vital for survivors.
It means pushing back against society’s imposed shame and blame. This understanding works to place responsibility where it belongs: on the perpetrators.
It means re-connecting survivors with community. One of the most insidious impacts of violence is disconnection and interruption from sources of support.
At the core of healing is connection. Knowing that you have people standing with you who will have your back is essential, and few things are more powerful than knowing that you are part of a community that supports you and believes in you.
Thank you for being a part the our community that supports survivors.
Thank you for connecting survivors with healing.
Sincerly,
The WAVAW Team
