Update: WAVAW’s Inclusion Project
As of April 1st, 2018, WAVAW’s services and programs are available to all Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary survivors of sexual violence.
A few months ago, as part of our Inclusion Project, we added our pronouns to our signatures.
This was an important step for us.We are working to create a space where Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary people can access services, work, and volunteer, so it’s important that we don’t make assumptions about which pronouns people use based on appearance or names.
To resist the idea that a persons name or appearance is an indication of their gender, we are sharing our pronouns in written correspondence and in person meetings.
We acknowledge and honour that there are multiple genders and wish to avoid reinforcing the idea that there are only 2 genders by defaulting to she/he pronouns.
This is one action we are taking to be more inclusive of trans, non-binary, and Two-Spirit people.
Using people’s correct pronouns is an important part of ensuring we are not erasing anyone’s identities, narratives, or experiences.
In Solidarity,
The WAVAW Team
