If so, Women Against Violence Against Women (WAVAW) Rape Crisis Centre is the organization to work at. WAVAW is a feminist organization that has been working in the community for 30 years to provide direct services to women hurt by sexual assault and to prevent and stop violence against women.
WAVAW is seeking a full-time Administrative Assistant, a self-identified women, to join our Administrative and Fund Development Department for the summer term. The Fund Development Department at WAVAW is small but effective. Many of our programs and services for survivors are sustained through WAVAW’s fundraising initiatives, as 50% of our annual revenue is from individual donations.
This term for this position is for 490 hours from June 4, 2013 to August 31, 2013. Please note this job position is partially funded by The Canada Summer Jobs, and as such, has to fulfill certain eligibility requirements (described below).
Responsibilities:
- Answering phone and in person inquiries and routes to appropriate staff member if required. Responding to routine queries with regard to the organization and services provided. Responds to donor inquiries and information requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Sorting and distributing both post and courier incoming mail and prepares outgoing mail. Logging incoming and outgoing courier.
- Participates in Thank-A-Thons and calls donors to thank them for donations.
- Works with the Fund Development staff to ensure all thank you letters, letters and newsletters are coordinated and scheduled appropriately.
- Works within Raiser’s Edge to process donations and clean-up data.
- Preparing, verifying and processing standard documents. Maintaining filing systems, logs, lists, registers or other records and office supplies.
- Providing word processing support to Executive Director and Fundraising Coordinator as required.
In addition, the Administrative Assistant will play a large role in organizing WAVAW’s community events throughout the summer. This will include:
- Researching vendors and reviewing contracts
- Coordinating event logistics
- Making preparations for event committee meetings
- Responding to public inquiries about events
- Documenting events through WAVAW’s blog and social media
- Promoting events
Qualifications/Skills
- Highly motivated by social justice issues, specifically women’s equality and violence prevention
- Registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intends to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; preferably enrolled in fundraising courses
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Knowledge of and previous experience in fundraising
- Excellent Excel skills and related application software programs
- Experience working with Raiser’s Edge or similar customer relationship management software preferred
- Must be self-motivated
- Enjoys working as part of a team
- Good organizational and time management skills
Hours of work: Variable hours between Monday to Friday, 8:45am – 5:00pm, some evening and weekend work may be required for special events.
Wage: $16.00/hr for 490 hours from June 4, 2013 to August 31, 2013.

- Students are legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
