Facebook Fundraisers – A “How To” Guide
Recently, WAVAW has found that Facebook Fundraisers have been hugely successful for peer to peer fundraising. They are so successful because you can invite people to donate, and when anyone donates, it is visible in the feed of the other people that you have invited to donate. We have had multiple community members bring in well over $500 in a short amount of time via Facebook Fundraisers. If you follow that hyperlink, it will take you to the Facebook page, where you will select “Raise Money For a Nonprofit”. Once you select that you search WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre. Two options will pop up; both of them will work. Click on either one of them, and then follow the prompts!

If you are wondering how to word a message to your followers, please feel free to copy bits and pieces, or all, of this text that I used on my personal pages for fundraising:
“I’ve decided to raise money for WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre (elaborate if you wish on your personal decision). I’ve chosen this
non-profit because their mission means a lot to me, and I hope you’ll consider contributing as a well.
Every little bit will help me reach my goal. I’ve included information about WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre below.
- WAVAW is the only organization in the Lower Mainland to offer specialized, gender-affirming support services to all trans, non-binary, and Two-Spirit survivors of sexualized violence.
- WAVAW knows that sex work is work and trans women are women and passionately advocates for the rights of these communities
- WAVAW offers immediate crisis support through their national 24-hour crisis and information line and hospital accompaniments
- WAVAW works to end sexualized violence by doing educational outreach that addresses the root causes of violence with high schools, universities, and public and private organizations
- WAVAW has a team of compassionate and skilled Victim Services Workers who go to the hospital with survivors immediately following a sexual assault. These staffs offer emotional support, advocacy, and resources so that the survivor is not alone during one of the most difficult times in their lives
- WAVAW supports survivors that wish to report their assaults with accompaniments to police visits and court dates
- WAVAW supports Indigenous survivors through culturally-informed, Elder supported one-to-one and group counselling
- WAVAW offers free-of-charge one-to-one and group counselling to survivors of sexualized violence. There is such a demand for this that we currently have 300 people on our waitlist for counselling. The average person waits 2 years to receive one-to-one counselling services at WAVAW.
WAVAW does all of this, and more, without any core funding from the government, which means that WAVAW must fundraise to pay rent, keep the lights on, pay administrative expenses, and respond to the needs of the communities they serve.
I believe that this incredible work is essential, and I want WAVAW to be able to continue to do the work of shifting society so that maybe one day we can end gendered oppression and sexualized violence.”
