Counselling and Support Groups

Our team at Salal offers individual and group counselling for survivors of sexualized violence. Operating from an intersectional feminist, decolonizing, and anti-oppressive lens, our program works to incorporate a multitude of approaches including information and education, art therapy, talk therapy, and ancient ways of healing including somatic work, land based healing, and connecting with community. Our counselling model supports survivors to cope with the impacts of violence, ranging from anger and grief, to issues surrounding sexuality, intimacy, and trust.

Our services are offered to survivors of marginalized genders: women, trans, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, and gender diverse people who have experienced sexualized violence.

Part of Salal’s community developed services includes counselling that is specialized for trans and gender diverse survivors. Counsellors may not be trans, Two-Spirit, or nonbinary, but have been given the skills and resources to support survivors experiencing the unique oppressions gender diverse folks face.

Indigenous survivors can access counselling rooted in Indigenous healing practices and traditions, including teachings based on the Medicine Wheel, which focuses on spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance.

Remembering Our Ancestors

This workshop series is provided for Indigenous survivors of sexualized violence of marginalized genders and is grounded in culture and tradition. Due to colonization and other forms of oppression, many Indigenous peoples have been disconnected from their teachings and ways of being in the world, especially being separated from community and living in an urban setting. Remembering Our Ancestors is grounded in cultural teachings to re-establish a connection to the land, bring traditional movement for healing the mind, body, and spirit, reclaim ancestral stories, Two-Spirit teachings, and include Indigenous teachings in our daily lives to help us heal. This virtual series extends from October to February, offering a new workshop each month. Each workshop is hosted over four weekly sessions a month. A closing ceremony is held in March. Participants are encouraged to attend all four workshops in the series to establish a deeper connection with the teachings and one another.

16 Steps for Discovery and Empowerment

The 16 Steps to Discovery and Empowerment is an approach developed by Dr. Charlotte Kasl to overcome addictions in a holistic way. It provides individuals with an alternative way of looking at themselves and the society they live in.

This model takes into account different facets of a person identity, and strives to address their mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. It encourages individuals to examine beliefs and behaviours from a place of self-love and acceptance.

This group is a two-hour virtual support group.

BIPOC Yoga Group

The BIPOC yoga group serves as a nurturing environment where survivors can gather to practice yoga, fostering healing within a supportive community. This 10-week program is designed to facilitate the exploration of healing in the realms of the body, movement, and self.
