Clarification on Trigger Warnings
Trigger warnings (TWs) are everywhere online these days, especially related to feminist topics and anti-violence articles, so we wanted to offer some clarification:
- Being triggered means not being in control of your sympathetic nervous system. Not being able to connect with the present moment because you’re having a flood of trauma memories.
- Having a strong response to a difficult topic (i.e. feelings of disgust, discomfort, anger, devastation, etc.) is completely understandable, but not the same as being triggered.
Remember that the antidote to feeling like we are crazy and alone is doing this together. Channel those strong feelings into action. Use them as a catalyst to connect and make change. This is how we take care of ourselves and each other.
