Are You Kidding Me?
WAVAW women are everywhere; and we are telling all the propagators of rape culture that we’ve got our eyes (and cameras) on you! One of our roving feminist friends captured this bus ad, courtesy of Vancouver’s own Transit Police, whose public safety campaign urges, “See Something? Say Something!” Well, then! Since we saw something a little alarming here, we’ll just go right ahead and tell you what it is.
This bus ad contains a pretty mixed message. Of course, we at WAVAW couldn’t agree more that “Nobody should touch, gesture, or say anything that makes you feel threatened or unsafe.” But!!!!! “Not reporting sexual assault is the real shame”?!?!?! Really? Really? Is this for real?
Women (and especially survivors of sexual assault and harassment) have shame heaped on us from all sides already. The last thing we need is a guilt trip if we choose to follow our instinct not to call the transit police (who may also make us “feel threatened or unsafe,” by the way).
Let’s get one thing straight, TransPo. Perpetrating sexual assault is the real shame.
