Are You Kidding Me?
Sociological Images has compiled a round-up of needlessly gendered products, which would be pretty hilarious if it weren’t such a disturbing reminder of the coercive gender norms we’re all swimming in. How about some manly bread? Endives for the stylish lady about town? Princess sausages for little girls? (These are all actually on the market.) Care for a hearty dash of sexism to spice up your sandwich? Um, suddenly not so hungry – please excuse me while I spew pink and blue vomit everywhere.
The consumer goods on this list are pretty laughable, but what about the gender-specific web developer job postings: women are sought to write “sexy code” and “take such a [sic] good care of code quality, as if it is a pair of their new shoes.” Sexist expectations like these impact women’s comfort level on the job and their male coworkers’ level of respect for them as professionals – and may deter many women from applying in the first place. (Certainly, you can count me out of any job that lists diligent shoe care among the prerequisites, unless it’s as a cobbler or similar.)
Oh, sigh, sexist marketers. I really wish you were kidding me.
