Job Summary:
The Aboriginal Women’s Counsellor will provide individual counselling, support groups, outreach, workshops and community referrals for Aboriginal women who have experienced violence in intimate relationships, sexual assault and/or childhood abuse. She will deliver workshops for volunteers and community agencies on providing support for female survivors from a feminist, anti-oppression, anti-colonialist perspective. She will assist women in assessing what services they require and support them to access those services. As a member of the staff team of WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre, the counsellor will actively engage in agency events, social justice activities and other related community work.
Qualifications:
- Education and experience in individual and group counseling
- Knowledge of Aboriginal issues as they pertain to violence against women
- Must have a broad based knowledge of the family and social issues that Aboriginal women face today, including the generational impacts of colonization and the residential school violence on First Nations families and communities
- A good understanding and practice of First Nations Cultures and traditions
- Must demonstrate a good working knowledge of community resources in Vancouver, particularly Aboriginal-specific resources
- Fluent in oral and written English, and a second language is preferred
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent group facilitation skills
- Must have strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to compile accurate records and prepare reports
