Aboriginal Family Counsellor
WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre is seeking two Aboriginal Family Counsellors who are committed to a Feminist Anti-Oppression approach to their work. We encourage Aboriginal, Metis, Inuit and First Nations women to apply. These positions are both one year Term-Certain full time positions. Closing date for applications is April 1st, 2013. Job Summary:
The Aboriginal Family Counsellor will provide individual and family counselling, support groups, education and community referrals for families. She will utilize Aboriginal traditions, healing practices, customs, protocols and spiritual practices in providing support and counselling for families from a feminist, anti-oppression, anti-colonialist perspective. As a member of the staff team of WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre, the counsellor will actively engage in agency events, social justice activities and other related community work.
Qualifications:
The candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field with extensive experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and education. She will have experience providing individual feminist counselling and group support for women who have experienced sexualized violence/assault. She will have a broad based knowledge of the family and social issues that Aboriginal women face today, including the generational impacts of the residential school system on Native families and communities, and a good understanding and practice of Aboriginal Cultures and traditions. The candidate will have experience applying an intersectional feminist perspective to her work, have knowledge of the social and political contexts that contribute to violence against Aboriginal women and have demonstrated success in working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds (e.g. cultural, religious, age, sexual orientation, etc).
